Why open models matter
Open-weight models give teams more control: local testing, deployment governance, lower vendor lock-in and adaptation to narrow processes. Llama, Qwen, DeepSeek and Mistral move in different directions, but together they expand the choice set.
When they are not the best path
If a team needs the strongest reasoning, guaranteed uptime, the lowest operational burden or mature safety features immediately, a cloud API may be the better choice. Open models need infrastructure, monitoring, safety and evals.
The hybrid strategy
